Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
