An adolescent from New South Wales has been formally accused following accusations he placing numerous false reports to first responders – an act referred to as “swatting calls” – wrongly stating gun violence incidents were happening at prominent shopping and universities in the US.
The Australian federal police formally accused the teenager on the 18th of December. They claim he is part of a suspected loosely organised internet-based network of offenders concealed by keyboards in order to trigger an “urgent and large-scale SWAT team deployment”.
“Frequently young males aged from 11 to 25, are engaging in activities such as swatting calls, doxxing and computer intrusion to achieve status, infamy and recognition in their internet circles.”
In connection with the probe, officers took possession of several computers and phones and a banned gun found in the young person’s custody. This action was executed by a specialized task force established in October 2025.
Graeme Marshall, commenting broadly, advised that individuals believing they can break the law with an internet connection and anonymous accounts are being targeted.
The AFP stated it launched its investigation following tip-offs from the FBI.
An FBI assistant director, from the International Operations Division, stated that the “dangerous and resource-draining crime” of false reports put lives at risk and drained critical public safety assets.
“This investigation shows that hidden identity in the digital realm is an illusion,” he said in a combined announcement alongside Australian police.
He further stated, “We are dedicated to working with international partners, our global allies, and industry experts to identify and prosecute those who misuse digital tools to create danger to society.”
The teenager has been indicted on multiple counts of communications-related crimes and a further count of unlawful ownership of a banned gun. The individual potentially faces up to fourteen years in jail.
“Our pledge (is|remains) to halting the damage and suffering individuals of these digital criminal groups are causing to the community, while laboring under the illusion they are untraceable,” the assistant commissioner concluded.
The youth was scheduled to be presented before a New South Wales juvenile court on this week.
