A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants domestically and abroad.

"The year's tuna brings a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a regular participant at the traditional January sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is famous for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This new purchase tops his own record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record another time.

A Tradition of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be served at its locations nationwide.

The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," remarked one happy patron.
