Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

A new acronym surfaced a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts including child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to treat a child who has lost their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it denies everything it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
