Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their progress".
Summers, who formerly led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the technology organization stated it accepted his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the company remarked.
This development arrives after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to approve a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then head to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has said he expects to sign the legislation, after changing his stance on the issue following objections from his supporters.
A group of Epstein-connected emails released by the legislative panel recently referenced several well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.
The communications showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to connect the official to notable global figures.
After the messages were released with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to rebuild trust and repair relationships with the individuals closest to me".
The professor occupied high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in the capital where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was no longer affiliated with the institution.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
