In a recent TV interview, US Senator Bill Cassidy voiced optimism that a cross-party agreement on healthcare costs is still within reach, even after the legislature's failure of rival proposals last week.
Speaking on a national talk show, the Louisiana Republican, who leads the Senate health committee, emphasized the necessity for a "common understanding" between Democrats and his GOP colleagues.
His appeal comes after the upper chamber rejected two distinct one party's and the other party's bills aimed at addressing medical costs, underscoring the ongoing division over how to handle impending tax credits that help millions buy insurance under the current health law.
"You've got to put cash in the consumer's pocket to pay the out of pocket," Cassidy stated, contending that Democrats must also account for the burden of steep out-of-pocket costs.
One proposal sought a three-year extension of the enhanced tax credits. In contrast, the plan put forward by Cassidy and a fellow GOP senator focuses on depositing funds of $1,000 into HSAs for individuals in specific insurance plans.
The Republican measure garnered no backing from across the aisle. However, the senator remained optimistic, suggesting he would be willing to a "temporary renewal" of the subsidies in exchange for addressing the problem of high deductibles.
"In my view an agreement to be had on this issue," Cassidy continued. "We need to push for that deal."
His remarks come as some lawmakers express hope that a type of agreement could materialize after last week's unsuccessful votes. A number of GOP members have expressed openness to briefly continue the boosted credits, with some restrictions, noting that approximately 22 million Americans might see their help when the credits expire at the end of the month.
"We can get this done," Cassidy asserted. "I believe we can address the issues, both about the deductible, but also about the premium."
Cassidy said he was currently endeavoring to craft a solution that could satisfy both sides. "Let's address the key issues," he concluded.
