Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He contested the legal system and the legal system prevailed.

Two months following being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally appears jail-bound.

Imminent Imprisonment

The adjudicated plotter – who has been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the next few days, during mounting speculation that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security prison.

Past Remarks on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing former soldier exhibited minimal compassion for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we give these scoundrels a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up there, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Prison Location Debate

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, several of whom this week visited the facility in an obvious bid to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he predicted the elderly leader to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the result of a life-threatening assault during the last political campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is very grave. He won’t be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “That’s virtually one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the only voice expressing views before the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.

Authoring in a major newspaper, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest wrong in its past”.

“This is an unfairness that gnaws the souls of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided General Response

This could be correct due to the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his expected imprisonment has also gladdened the feelings of many other people who think he deserves to be jailed for plotting to block the elected leader from assuming office – and also scheming to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the incumbent president's allied group, stated: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to receive respectful handling – but respectful handling behind bars. He cannot persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years praising the harsh treatment of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights were not for offenders – opted to tour a prison to find out what conditions are actually like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, insulting treatment”.

Potential Prison Conditions

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about 14,000 detainees, his expected assigned facility looks to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.

Based on sources, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 130 square foot bathroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and also a minibar in his quarters as long as they were provided by his family,” information suggested.

Political Responses

He condemned the rumoured plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his fate in the {
