The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
