New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
