The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory over the same opponent.
The champion started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.
That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
