A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
