The government has disclosed the visual identity for Great British Railways, representing a key advance in its policy to bring the railways back into state hands.

An Patriotic Palette and Familiar Symbol

The new livery features a patriotic colour scheme to reflect the Union Flag and will be used on GBR trains, at terminals, and across its website and app.

Notably, the symbol is the iconic double-arrow logo historically used by National Rail and first introduced in the mid-20th century for the former state operator.

The Introduction Strategy

The introduction of the branding, which was created by the department, is scheduled to take place over time.

Travellers are scheduled to start spotting the newly-branded services on the UK rail network from next spring.

In December, the design will be showcased at major railway stations, like Glasgow Central.

A Journey to Renationalisation

The Railways Bill, which will pave the way the formation of GBR, is currently progressing through the legislative process.

The administration has said it is taking control of the railways so the system is "owned by the people, operating for the passengers, not for private shareholders."

The new body will consolidate the operation of train services and tracks and signals under a unified structure.

The department has said it will merge 17 separate bodies and "reduce the frustrating red tape and lack of accountability that has long affected the railways."

App-Based Services and Existing Ownership

The introduction of GBR will also involve a dedicated app, which will allow passengers to view timetables and reserve journeys free from additional fees.

Disabled users will also be able to use the application to request support.

Several train companies had earlier been nationalised under the outgoing government, such as LNER.

There are now 7 operating companies now in state ownership, accounting for about a one-third of rail travel.

In the last twelve months, c2c have been nationalised, with further franchises likely to follow in the coming years.

Ministerial and Industry Comments

"The new design is more than a cosmetic change," stated the relevant minister. It symbolises "a transformed service, leaving behind the frustrations of the previous system and focused solely on providing a reliable public service."

Industry representatives have acknowledged the focus to enhancing services.

"The industry will carry on to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless handover to the new system," a representative added.
