This Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Speculators

To celebrate the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration has been formed. The Pokémon Company and London's Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop featuring special merchandise. Enthusiasts can look forward to products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the museum's theme. The big draw, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a free bonus for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled both on-site at the museum to its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

Pokécology That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated volume packed with beautiful artwork depicting Pokémon in their natural habitats. It's essentially is what an in-world scientist might publish once adventurers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin might have created had the famous islands were populated by Pidgeys rather than birds. A key appeal lies in the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate scientific study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Special Card Different

It is common to issue special edition promos for major tournaments and brand collaborations. A lot of these promotional cards often feature the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this new promotion apart however, is the distinctly bigger dimensions. Although exact measurements were not immediately shared, availability will certainly be strictly limited, and customers able to get just one card per purchase.

Curbing Reseller Activity

Per an official announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available outside the museum walls. But, a wider release will only be select retailers in the UK. Critically, fans cannot acquire the card via the official web shop. While speculator demand is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're feeling left out, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to the Windy City later this year.

"All profits from purchases made in the museum store and its web shop, including Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," it notes.
